Our Day Neckar South Neckar North Maps Our Evening Please Read Me

Our Day

Our walk today was circular based on Neckargemuend. We set off from the Old Town Station (which was new) and, keeping south of the river, climbed up to the Roebuck Cliff (Bock Felsen). We then headed through the forest to the mediaeval fortified town of Dilsberg. We enjoyed the view of course and after a snack headed down to Neckarsteinach on the other side of the River Neckar. Then it was through the forest visiting the two of the four castles. Eventually we reached Neckargemuend for our train back to Heidelberg. Our walk was about 9 miles or 14 Km, but with local walk-abouts, perhaps half a mile or so more.

(The pictures below which are captioned with an asterisk '*', are ones I took earlier on another occasion, but I included them here to make our pictorial narrative "complete".)

Here are three of us,
guarding the entrance to the fortified mediaeval town of Dilsberg.

Neckar South

We started our walk on the south side of the River Neckar. In Neckargemuend, we set off from the Old Town Station (which was new) and climbed up to the Roebuck Cliff (Bock Felsen). We then headed through the forest to the mediaeval fortified town of Dilsberg. Here we enjoyed the view. After a snack we descended to the River, which we crossed by the weir.

Here we are at the Roebuck Cliff.

We are enjoying the view,
except, we turned round for the picture!

Here we are again.

As we ascend the slope leading to Dilsberg, we can look across the River Neckar, to where we are going in the afternoon. Here we see the fourth, the most westerly, and the youngest (ca 1335) of Neckarsteinach's four castles. The castle's name translates as "Swallow's Nest". *

Having climbed the slope to Dilsberg, we can look back in a westerly direction. The view is worth the climb! Below us is the River Neckar. A bit further along is Neckargemuend from where we started out today and where we shall finish. On the distant horizon is the King's Chair. *

We have reached the town gate of Dilsberg ...

... where it's time for some "we woz here piccies".

Three more ...

... piccies ...

... to make sure we record the event!

Neckar North

Once on the north side of the River we entered historic Neckarsteinach and climbed up to the Four Castles. We visited the last two of the castles, which are not inhabited. More views. Then it was back through the forest to Neckargemuend Main Station and the S-Bahn back to Heidelberg. A nice 9 mile (14 Km) walk, and nice exercise in the fresh air!

Having crossed the River Neckar by the weir, we see this view of Neckarsteinach and the first two of the four castles towering above the town. *

We climb through the woods and stop off at castles three and four.
Here we are at the fourth castle - the "Swallow's Nest".
Behind is Dilsberg where we were an hour or two previous. *

Here is the "Swallow's Nest" with Neckarsteinach in the background. *

We continue through the forest and finally reach
Neckargemuend for the S-Bahn back to Heidelberg. *

Our Evening

We would return at different times, so we all made our separate arrangements today. Some of us took advantage of the excellent grocery shop nearby in the High Street and ate in at the hostel. The Sightseers and Bikers "did their own thing" when it came to evening dining. There were so many possibilities to choose from!
